Welcome to Andros
Island, once named “La Isla del Espirito
Santo” (Island of the Holy Spirit) by Spanish
explorers for its abundance of water.
The water of Andros is its greatest
asset. Thousands of visitors flock here annually
for the purpose of exploring the world’s
third longest stretch of tropical reef. An even
greater number hunt bonefish, tarpon and permit
on the most extensive area of flats in the world.
Onshore, The island’s dense fresh water lens
has formed hundreds of blue holes, inland lakes,
wetlands and lush forests which attract many species
of migratory birds, butterflies, iguanas, wild
boars and millions of land crabs. Andros is without
a doubt, an adventure traveler and ecotourism paradise.
However, the most important
feature of Andros is its people. The people of
Andros have for generations been able to manipulate
its aquatic environment to sustain themselves,
and to provide visitors with satisfying guest experiences
primarily in the areas of scuba diving, snorkeling
and fly-fishing.
All Androsians join me in the
hope that you will use this map to direct you through
our historical and culturally diverse settlements
while finding important businesses and service
providers. |
