Junkanoo
Junkanoo is the National
Festival of the Bahamas;
it represents
our roots and it
is our heritage. Junkanoo originated
during
the days of slavery
when
the slaves
were given time off
to
celebrate the holidays
with African
dance, music and
costume. The festival
is named after “JOHN CANOE”,
an African tribal
chief who demanded
the right
to celebrate
with his
people even after
being brought to
the West
Indies in Slavery.
Junkanoo today is
a traditional rally
to
cowbells, whistles
and goat-skin drums
as costumed revelers
dance away. Contact
the
Eleuthera Tourist
Office at 242-332-2142.
Parades held in Tarpum
Bay, Rock Sound and
Harbour Island.

MARCH
20th
The
5th Annual Ride for Hope
will take place in North
Eleuthera
on March 20th, 2010.
Riders of all ages and skill
come together to raise money
to support cancer care and
treatment in the Bahamas.
In four years
over 800 riders have raised
a combined $900,000 for this
worthwhile
cause. Riders can ride the
distance of their choice
on a beautiful
out & back course south
on Eleuthera, using any of
our seven
support tents as turn-around
points to ride distances
from six to 100 miles. Generous
corporate and private support
allows each dollar raised
by riders to go directly
to improving
the care and treatment of
cancer patients in the Bahamas.
These
funds have paid off the Cancer
Society’s debt incurred
in building the Cancer Caring
Center in Nassau, have paid for
the completion of the Cancer
Society’s Governor’s
Harbour Clinic, have funded 2
years of genetic research into
unique breast cancer gene (BRCA1)
mutations found in the Bahamas,
and have launched a Family Island
Mammogram Screening (FIMS) Initiative,
which brings at risk women to
Nassau for mammogram screenings.
Please join us in Eleuthera for
a wonderful day of family, exercise,
community – all in the
name of a good cause. The 5th
Annual Ride for Hope – together
we can make a difference!
